Every respectable gun enthusiast needs a collection of 1911 pistols. Not only is it a significantly important, historic gun, it is a still-relevant high performance design. Few things last as long as the 1911.  Fewer still are classic designs that keep up with or exceed more-recent models.

Since its development by John Browning in the early 1900s, it has been utilized by our US Military for World Wars, by LE agencies for protection of the people, by civilians for personal and home defense and recreation, and by competitors, both amateur and professional, in shooting competitions throughout the globe.

But there are so many options - how does one choose?

Well let us help. We've created a small sampling of a few of #RobsFavorites -- Four 1911s that are definitely collection worthy and more importantly, shooting worthy.

This is a must-have pistol for any discreet gun owner who wants to carry concealed. The EMP® with Concealed Carry Contour is a perfect and seamless fit for the job, as the frame sports a smooth bevel cut on the mainspring housing. It’s a small adjustment with big impact.

Rob says that, "The CCC EMP® is my favorite of the small 1911s. It's 4-inch barrel keeps it tidy and concealable, while still permitting the gun to perform like the larger and heavier full-size models."  #CoolFactor #PracticalFactor

The rounded contour of the grip prevents snagging and allows the pistol to easily disappear under garments so you don't have to worry about printing.

On top of the concealment benefits, the CCC's contouring and aggressive G10 Grips also fit many shooter's hands better. Better fit means better shooting.  And the EMP® CCC is super light, weighing in at just 30.5 ounces.

The EMP® CCC was originally designed around the 9mm cartridge and is also available in .40 caliber. Compressing the traditional 1911 .45 ACP grip to fit the 9mm and .40 caliber cartridges took the redesigning of nine different components; including the frame, slide, extractor, trigger bow, trigger mechanism, firing pin, firing pin spring, plunger tube and spring.

And that's an accomplishment that we (Rob included) are quite proud of. #HarderThanYouThink

Mil Spec

MIL SPEC (Military specifications) means a design that satisfies the requirements specified by its requestor -- In this case the US Military. The MIL SPEC is Springfield's rendition of the A1 upgrade that was made popular a few years after the 1911's introduction and adoption by the U.S. Military.

In an effort to make the original model more user friendly, several changes were made to the pistol that enhanced the shoot-ability for a wider range of hand sizes. Those changes also altered the pistol's feel in the hand -- for the better.

Discerning civilians benefit from such designs by knowing the product will live up to the hard use and reliability required by the US Military.

Our Mil Spec 1911 also satisfies one of our most-active pistol shooters, Rob Leatham. But as a traditional kind of guy, Rob has a hard time choosing his favorite feature of the Mil Spec pistol. "If you want simplicity, the MIL SPEC has everything you need and nothing you don't".  #Classic

True to the old-school GI issue 1911-A1s, the mainspring housing is arched style and the slide has serrations only on the rear. The Mil Spec also has the short military combat trigger, adhering to the original 1911-A1 design. The walnut grips with the Springfield Armory® cross-cannon logo look great with either the stainless steel or parkerized forged carbon steel frames.

The full-sized frame and full-sized slide make the .45 caliber Mil Spec 1911 suitable for any use, whether as a fun range gun or a home defense pistol.

RANGE OFFICER® Elite Champion

This is one of the newest additions to the Springfield Armory 1911 family. A descendant of the Range Officer® line, the Elite Champion™ has incorporated some fine adjustments to make it just right.

  • Thin line G-10 grips shave down the overall width, for a perfect fit for smaller hands.
  • Tactical rack rear sight with a fiber optic front sight allows a quick and precise sight picture to enhance your accuracy and consistency.
  • Gen 2 trigger is smooth and clean.
  • Ambidextrous safety was added for our left-handed shooters.
  • Completing the whole package is a durable and beautifully dark Black-T® Finish.

Rob's favorite features of the RO Elite Champion™ are the combination of the full-size 1911 frame with the shorter 4-inch fully-supported, steel match-grade bull barrel. "This gun is so easy and fun to shoot! The standard-size frame allows you to get the absolute best grip on the gun, which is always important."

You can get your new RO Elite Champion in either 9MM or .45ACP.

The Tactical Response Pistol (TRP™) is a dream 1911. This gun will excel in just about any environment you encounter. It has everything you could ever want in a handgun:

  • Clean, Crisp, Short Trigger Pull
  • Ambidextrous Safety
  • 3-dot Tritium Sights
  • Protective Armory Kote™ or Stainless Steel Finish
  • Checkered Front Strap and Mainspring Housing
  • Oversized Magazine Well

The TRP also has extended beveled magazines with slam pads -- for situations where you don’t have time to be gentle. This is one of Rob's favorite components of the TRP™.  As a competition shooter, he knows that small enhancements like these not only improve performance at the range, but matter greatly on the street.

"If you want all the bells and whistles to help extract every last ounce of your shooting ability, you should get the TRP™."

Designed specifically for rough use, the TRP™ is the top of the line for 1911s. In fact the TRP™ is the spin-off of our famed Custom Shop Professional model. Basically you get the same upgraded, high-performing handgun at a fraction of the price.

1911 Heaven

There are so many other 1911s in the Springfield Armory line-up, but these 4 are a great start (or addition) to a firearm collection that will bring you and yours generations of satisfaction and use.
